PLEASE READ: While these ideas do work and many small and large Facebook pages employ them everyday, they are technically against Facebook’s promotional guidelines. You DO run the risk of having your page shut down for running such contests. I have not personally witnessed this happen, but it is a possibility…so educate yourself on Facebook’s Page Terms and proceed with caution!
Running simple contests is a great way to engage and grow your Facebook fan base. Let’s face it, no matter how much somebody might love your business or product they won’t remain a fan of your page for long if all you do is beat them over the head with promotional copy and coupon codes. You need to give them something to do that has nothing to do with your business offering, but everything to do with engagement.
Don’t forget why people are on Facebook: to hang out with friends, not to shop. If you give your fans something fun to do, they will remember you and your brand for it. Here are a few simple Facebook contests and games that you can do to keep your fans entertained, engaged and loving your brand.
Scavenger Hunt – Post a small list of things for your fans to find on your website. First person to comment with the URLs where these items are found wins a small prize. Cheap but good prizes to give away for this and the following contests are gift cards. $20 iTunes gift cards, for instance. This contest has the added benefit of actually driving traffic to your site.
Treasure Hunt – This is similar to the Scavenger Hunt, except that instead of a small list of relatively easy to find items, you have people find 1 hard to find item. Additionally, you post out clues to the item’s location during the run of the contest. For this contest, it’s a good idea to actually create a specific image – a little treasure chest for instance – and then hide it somewhere on your site. Example: If you sell guitar amplifiers, you might hide your treasure chest on a EVH 5150 product page, then give Van Halen related clues out.
Funny Caption Contest – Post a picture and ask people to comment with funny captions about the picture. You pick the funniest caption at the end of the contest as the winner. Or if you really want to maximize this contest (and others like it) you say the winner will be the caption with the most LIKEs. This encourages the people playing the game to have their friends LIKE their comment, which means additional people coming to your Facebook page!
Story Teller Contest – Find three random images and ask people to comment with a little story that ties them all together. Most creative story – or story with the most LIKEs – wins.
Why Should You Win? – Simply have people explain why they should win whatever the prize is. Most creative or funny reason – or with the most LIKEs – wins.
